Kawartha Land Trust (KLT) is conserving the natural environment and enhancing the quality of life in the Kawarthas. They do this by accepting donations of land and/or interests in land and engaging the community in support of this work to ensure that these lands are cared for, in perpetuity.
KLT is collaborating with BCWA as they share similar goals and objectives regarding conservation of natural heritage in the region. They recognize that protecting natural heritage requires collaboration between communities and from the people living in those communities.
KLT and BCWA know that working collaboratively can achieve greater impact. KLT is working with BCWA within the Baxter Creek watershed to achieve a connected landscape. Both organizations recognize the intrinsic ecological values of publicly accessible open green spaces and the benefit of the ecosystem services they provide to people.
KLT recognizes the intrinsic ecological value of the former Millbrook Jail Lands as an open public greenspace. KLT is actively supporting BCWA towards a community engagement strategy to acquire and protect the property. The KLT letter of support for this initiative can be downloaded and read here.
Esri shares a deep commitment to the missions of many nonprofit organizations across the globe.
In June of 2022, Esri Canada welcomed the BCWA to the Esri Nonprofit Program, which provides BCWA with sustained, low-cost access to geographic information system (GIS) software and resources. As a partner of the Baxter Creek Watershed Alliance (BCWA), Esri Canada appreciates the work we do and sees it as vital to the future of our communities and our planet.
With GIS maps and analysis, the BCWA organization is now equipped to achieve stronger collaboration, better community engagement, persuasive storytelling, and informed decision-making.
Since launching the Esri Nonprofit Program in 2010, Esri has connected more than 10,000 organizations with geospatial data and tools. BCWA is now part of this vibrant and growing community using GIS to make the community of Cavan-Monaghan, Millbrook, and the Baxter Creek Watershed a better place.

Trout Unlimited Millbrook is a new chapter for Trout Unlimited located in the Cavan Monaghan area.
With outdoor recreation being a huge draw to the area, Trout Unlimited Millbrook recognizes that small cold water trout streams are often overlooked for the larger waters of the Kawartha Lakes. The Millbrook chapter focuses first on the beautiful Baxter and Squirrel Creeks that meander through the town and surrounding landscape. The goal of the chapter is to bring existing groups and residents together to work collectively to maintain and in some areas improve a stream system .
Trout Unlimited Millbrook supports the BCWA's initiative to protected the former Millbrook Jail Lands which is the source of at least one, if not two, cold water tributaries of Baxter Creek. To demonstrate this support, Trout Unlimited wrote a letter of support for the Old Millbrook Jail Lands Association and the vision BCWA has for the property. The letter can be downloaded and read here.
Camp Kawartha is an accredited, not-for-profit organization offering a broad range of innovative year-round outdoor and environmental programming. They also train educators, provide workshops on sustainability and are working with their community to foster stewardship through every age and stage of a child’s development.
Camp Kawartha supports the vision BCWA has initiated under the Old Millbrook Jail Lands Association and the green space development objectives of the initial land use planning process. To demonstrate this support, Camp Kawartha has written a letter of suport to BCWA which can be downloaded and read here.
Save Our Trees (officially registered as PHorests 4R PHuture) is a dynamic organization actively partnered with likeminded community stakeholders advocating for an environmentally sustainable future that protects and preserves our tress and eco-system in Port Hope and the surrounding areas.
Save Our trees is working with their community and local decision-makers to advance sustainable planning principles to preserve their natural heritage and maintain their community as a livable community.
Save Our Trees supports the Kawartha Land Trust (KLT) and the Baxter Creek Watershed Alliance’s far-sighted vision to protect and preserve the ecological heritage of the Baxter Creek Watershed and specifically the Old Millbrook Jail lands. To show their support, Save Our Trees has written a letter of support to BCWA which can be downloaded and read here.
4RG is a dynamic local organization whose mission is to engage and mobilize our community to take effective action to combat climate change. We advocate/enlist support from our local governments and collaborate with like-minded community organizations.
4RG recognizes the importance of the former Millbrook Jail property as a nature-based climate mitigation asset. Preserving forestlands such as this helps mitigate climate change since they act as a carbon sink and absorb greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. Land conservation also helps wildlife weather the climate crisis. This is especially important now as North America’s bird population has declined by nearly 30 percent since 1970. This is mostly as a result of natural areas being lost to development. Finally, green spaces such as the Old Millbrook Jail Lands double as recreation opportunities. Spending time in nature is recognized as essential for our mental and physical health.
For Our Grandchildren (4RG) is delighted to support the Kawartha Land Trust (KLT) and the Baxter Creek Watershed Alliance’s vision to protect the ecologically significant areas of the Old Millbrook Jail Lands as well as their broader work in conservation issues. Their letter of support to BCWA can be downloaded and read here.
The Ontario Headwaters Institute (OHI) works to protect Ontario’s watersheds, their natural heritage, and receiving waters such as the Great Lakes.
The OHI was impressed with the mission of the BCWA and the specific plans for the former Millbrook Correction Centre lands. OHI recognizes the value in galvanizing public awareness on the importance of watershed management as a means of safeguarding regional ecological integrity and in transforming areas of public lands, such as the old jail lands, to beneficial public use.
OHI is pleased to consider supporting future specific efforts of BCWA. Their letter of support to BCWA can be downloaded and read here.
